I did 3 miles on the treadmill today, something I've never done before, nor thought that I could do. It took me 50 min of walking on the treadmill to get there, but I did it. All the way I was thinking to myself that it would be ok if i stopped, but something else just wanted to prove that I was capable of accepting a challenge even one set by a fitness magazine and actually see it through. I know that's not much for all you seasoned exercisers out there but it was a big deal for me. For the next month I shall be doing more of the same, hopefully I'll be able to build my speed up so I can do the same distance in a shorter period of time. By the end of this programme I shall be walking 4 miles on the treadmill, hopefully at a faster time than my first go. Also it should be a bit easier when I get me my new runners, which I can't quite afford at the moment. Question...does anyone of you know if Nike shoes with something called motion control or something like that are any good cos that's what I've got my eye on at the moment, either those or Ryka shoes, so advice me people.
Was mostly good on the eating front today, until dinner time, but I'll just focus on my wins cos that seems a bit more uplifting than focussing on the downs. Until recenlty, the old adage "calories in, calories out" seemed so unatainable without actually physically counting calories in and trying to balance that value with calories out. That is until I read an article in Shape or mind, spirit body fitness that said that to lose weight and achieve the calories in calories out rule, all you have to do is make a split between calories consumed and those used. Eg if wanting to cut out 500 calories from your diet, then eat 250 cals less and excercise enough to burn or 250 cals. Somehow that just clicked into place for me, and I now try to achieve that, cos I'm not one for keeping count of calories, not that bright or crazy. Also I find that when I put myself on an actual diet no matter how liberal, I seem to go in the complete opposite direction and eat everything that I set out not to eat in the first place.
It was my mums birthday today, and I called her back home in africa. Tell you what, its so hard to be away from family sometimes. I've been here for 5yrs now, that's 5yrs of not being able to hug my mum or my sister, or see my little cousin grow up or just enjoy my family as a whole. I really miss them, especially my sister. I hope that all you reading this take the moment to appreciate what a great support system you have at hand in you family, not just for weightloss, but also for day to day life, cos I envy you a lot.
Have a good day/night/evening, still waiting for more snack suggestions (thanks purl!).

hey Tash! Good job on the treadmill. If you go to www.coolrunning.com they have a couch potato to 5K program you can print off. That is how I got started with the power walking and running. It's really simple to start!! check it out. You did awesome though, 3 miles is 5K and that's what I was doing in roughly the same time. It took me a few weeks to up my time but still only doing 5K in 38 minutes. So...great job. Can you check out Nike Shox for walking/running. They are suppose to be really good.

Snack ideas eh??? I have bought those mini bagels. 2 for 3 points and put some of that philadelphia light cream cheese on it...1 tbsp is 1 point and goes a long way. ANd the cream cheese is flavoured so really great tasting. Other snacks: red pepper strips dipped in light ranch dressing, sliced apple with cheddar, laughing cow cheese on rice cakes, crispy minis, celery with laughing cow cheese spread on it, slim fast chocolate peanut butter bars (2 points)..

Have a great day!! :)

Hey Tash! Great job on the treadmill! I'm trying to get myself to the point where I consistently exercise and can track my progress and success!

Thanks for your comment on my blog. It really made me think about something I haven't thought about in a long time. How much of my time goes to me and how much goes to other things? I think if I really start thinking about this, I'll realize that much more time needs to be placed on doing things that are good for me. So thanks! That really helped!

Also, for the snack question. I would recommend my favorite little friends, the j-ello pudding cups because they're sweet and chocolatey without a lot of guilt. Yet if you read my last post, you'll see how even they can be abused!

Hey Tash - I know what you mean about family. I moved to Aus nearly 7 years ago with my husband. I left all my family and friends behind and now we are separated. It is very hard sometimes, I miss them terribly. My mum was diagnosed with cancer last year and I couldn't go back to look after her during the treatment. I really regret that but fue to circumstances here, it was impossible.

I shall now have a proper read of your blog - yippee! How exciting - a new blog to read!

Runners world have a good review of about 30 different runners this month. Motion control is for different kinds of feet, pronting, under-pronating etc. Depends if your feet roll in, out or are neutral. You should get the checked out at athletes foot so that you get the right kind of runners for your feet. I'm a firm believer in spending good money on good running shoes to prevent injuries. Don't rush into buying anything - they are expensive and well worth the cost, but ONLY if you get the right ones for YOUR feet.

I agree with the comment below. If you've never bought running shoes before find someone who knows what they're talking about. Find a proper running shop in your city and get them to look at your feet. The type of runners you get depend on your feet and wheter you are neutral, a pronator etc. Getting the wrong runners can ruin your running career before you even begin!

Great job on 3 miles! You're doing fantastic.

Tash, I used to suffer from shin slints every time I ran in my last pair of joggers, take your time, cause when you spend on average $250 for a pair of joggers you want them to work for you. Don't want it to be a costly mistake, it takes me on average around 2 weeks to find the perfect pair, I don't care if they are getting annoyed with me going into their shops day in and day out just tryin on shoes. I even walk around their shop in them for about 10mins just to check that they are right for me.

Best of luck, will have to scroll back and check out the rest of your blog.
